Mpumi Zikalala

Managing Director

De Beers Group Managed Operations

Mpumi was appointed Managing Director, De Beers Group Managed Operations, in April 2019.


Mpumi was a De Beers Group bursar and officially joined the company in 2001 as a process engineer. She was appointed General Manager at De Beers Kimberley Mines in 2007, becoming the first female General Manager in De Beers Group. In 2010, she was appointed General Manager of the Group’s Voorspoed mine and three and a half years later became Senior Vice-President of De Beers Sightholder Sales South Africa, the company that sorts, values and sells all De Beers Group production in South Africa.


She was made Deputy CEO of De Beers Consolidated Mines in November 2017, rising to her current position as the first head of the Group’s Managed Operations business 17 months later. Managed Operations includes De Beers Group's operations in South Africa and Canada.


Mpumi holds a BSc in chemical engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand and completed leadership development at the London Business School.

Dr Brennan Jacoby

Philosopher & Founder

Philosophy at work

Dr. Brennan Jacoby is a philosopher and the founder of Philosophy at Work, an organisation helping businesses think their best. Brennan holds a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D in philosophy, and his doctoral work analysed trust in the context of interpersonal relationships and corporate character. With Philosophy at Work, he helps businesses and their people develop the psychological safety and cognitive confidence they need to think their best as they navigate an everchanging professional landscape. Recent projects include helping Deloitte UK cultivate a growth mindset, supporting The Wellcome Trust to explore trust in healthcare, and enhancing curiosity across Sony Music’s global community.  


A Macquarie Research Excellence Award recipient, Brennan is the author of: Trust and Betrayal: A Conceptual Analysis (Macquarie Univ. 2011).  His other publications include; The Vices and Virtues of Collaboration (commissioned by Dropbox, 2016), “The Doolittle Effect” in Four-Legged Therapy (Octopus, 2018), “Who Can You Trust in a Post-Truth World” (commissioned by Nesta); and “Innovative Enquiry” (Communication Director, 2018). 


Brennan works across industries and sectors (examples include groups from Herbert Smith Freehills, Sky, Sony Music, Slaughter and May, Hogan Lovells, Capital One Bank, Deloitte, Media Arts Lab, Ropes and Gray, The Guardian, Nike, and The Financial Times), and with global teams, having delivered sessions in the UK, Ireland, USA, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Denmark, Spain, Australia and Taiwan.  


In addition to his role with Philosophy at Work, Brennan is a fellow at the Royal Society of the Arts. Originally from Detroit Michigan, he studied in Sydney, Australia and is now based in the UK. 

My passion is for languages and education and I spent many years teaching Modern Foreign Languages at inner city secondary schools in the UK. I speak Spanish, Portuguese and French, and have lived in Spain, Chile and Brazil.


Living around the world has helped me communicate, understand and build strong relationships with all different kinds of people. I especially love connecting with our international learners and seeing how they apply our programme in different cultural contexts.


I am at my happiest when socialising, travelling, cooking, eating, dancing, doing yoga and listening to live music – although I’ve yet to attempt all of these at the same time.

I started my career as a Religious Studies and Philosophy teacher, before working for a major UK charity developing and piloting new fundraising initiatives and technologies. Innovations consulting was a natural next step, followed by setting up an L & D and content marketing agency inside The School of Life. I also ran my own content creation business, Studio Loki.

 

As Chief Learning Officer, I bring together my love of innovation, creativity and big ideas, overseeing the curriculum and coaching programme at Future Talent.

 

In my spare time I enjoy watching movies, travelling and (rather badly) practising Jiu Jitsu.

Before I qualified as an assessor, I ran a large music venue in London. While there, I completed a Level 4 NVQ in Management and fell in love with coaching. My passion quickly progressed and I’ve been coaching ever since.


I am fascinated by unconscious processes in individuals and groups, and completing a counselling course has helped me to develop my knowledge further. I can now understand my learners’ needs and worries much more deeply.


And when I’m not coaching? I listen to podcasts and audio books about serial killers, and I exercise quite a bit, too. You can often catch me, Lycra- clad, trying to do crunches with my dog’s face hovering over me!

I spent my early career as a professional dancer and instructor: travelling the world, working at Pineapple Studios, and even donning the Butlin’s Redcoat. The skills I had developed in performance and teaching transferred well to the corporate world.

 

After a stint in operational management and leadership, I realised I wanted to support the development of others. After qualifying as an NLP Business Practitioner in Coaching, I set up a consultancy offering bespoke programmes, and ultimately moved into apprenticeships. I continue to live and breathe development, sharing insights from my breadth of experience.

 

Did someone say “shall we dance?” It’s still a true love of mine and I recently jived my way to runner-up in a Charity Strictly Come Dancing Competition!

I began my working life as a professional musician, before turning to teaching. I spent 21 years in Senior Leadership roles in Education. Within my career I have worked with the widest possible variety of learners; ranging from young children to senior leaders to pensioners.

 

I love training, nurturing and developing people and am absolutely passionate about lifelong learning. I want to add value to people’s lives, whoever they may be and whatever their stage of life.

 

Outside work hours if I am not playing music somewhere, I am generally attempting to wear out my crazy spaniel, driving ‘Mom’s Taxi’, cooking or hiding at the gym - pretending to exercise.

I worked in front of house in London’s West End before moving into education. My thirst for adventure led me to move a little further - this time to Spain to teach English. I’ve been in the south of Spain for many years, and have loved total immersion in the culture and language.


I am inspired by working with enthusiastic learners who are keen to develop themselves, which naturally led me to join FTL. I combine my skills as an educationalist and coach to provide tailored support and encouragement. Being able to communicate in both English and Spanish strengthens my enjoyment of working with diverse groups around the globe.


At weekends, you’ll find me relaxing at the beach (respite is the key to good work), or reading on my roof terrace – I facilitate our learner book club so come and say hello!

My first role was as a production co-ordinator for an international events organisation, where a can-do attitude and growth mindset were key. I then worked in education as a teacher, co-ordinator and support worker across businesses and secondary schools.

 

Having worked in four countries on two continents, and inside the public, private and voluntary sectors, I have developed a keen cultural and critical awareness, and sense of inclusivity. I have also learned to be agile and flex my communication style, attributes that I love seeing develop in my learners.

 

Films and music occupy much of my free time, unless I’m daydreaming about the campervan, wondering where and when I can embark on my next tour...

Before moving into education, I worked as an employability advisor, helping clients to find sustainable careers. I enjoyed helping clients with their careers and life goals so much that I eventually decided to take the big leap into teaching, with a focus on adult education. I spent the next 10 years working for a number of colleges, helping people to develop their skills and complete the qualifications they needed to achieve their goals. As I used to manage an English and Maths department, my specialisms include communication and problem solving.


My passion for adult education remains as strong as ever, but when I get some time away from the day job, I like to go for runs along the coast and enjoy indoor bouldering

I have worked as a secondary teacher and spent time in careers and employability in Higher Education. Before this, I was a trainer and cabin crew in the aviation sector.  
 
Throughout my career, I have pursued an interest in management and leadership and been comitted to facilitating personal development, both when working with students and colleagues, and when developing my own skills and experience.  
 
One of my passions is travel. I have explored the world for work and independently and been fortunate to live and work in Australia, the USA and Spain. But my heart lies in the fells of the Lake District in the UK, despite a fear of heights!  

 

I have worked in the film and the music industries, and in development management. I had fun, but I wanted to move into in a more people-centric role. I trained as a secondary teacher, specialising in Religious Studies, and headed up a department teaching Religion and Philosophy. There, I shaped my interest in kindling thought and debate and working with children.  
 
Joining Future Talent Learning after the birth of my first child furthered my passion for coaching, conversation and supporting learners to achieve their goals.  
 
When not coaching and assessing, I am ‘chief wrangler’ to my two tiny daughters, lifting weights or trying to work out where the cat hid his last mouse.  

 

I have worked in retail as part of an in-house leadership programme and as a Department Manager. While working as a manager, I enjoyed the coaching aspects and this led me to develop a new career path.  
 
I completed a PDGE in Teaching and worked my way up to Head of Department.  
 
I am passionate about developing those around me and believe strongly in saying “comparison is the their of joy” - I keep this focus when coaching. Everyone’s journey, be it personal or professional, is different and I always give my best when helping others on their journey.  
 
In my free time, I love heading to the Peak District in the campervan for walks with my partner and two dogs. I also enjoy doing exercise, particularly running, but usually balance out the fitness gains with chocolate or cookies.  

 

I spent the early part of my career in Retail Management for a large department store experiencing many different roles, but eventually found my true vocation as a trainer delivering anything from Customer service training to Graduate development.


Whilst training in this role I discovered I was totally hooked wanting to discover more about how clever questioning and listening can unleash potential. This passion for coaching has followed me throughout my various roles in apprenticeship provision, with the development and success of my learners being a key motivator.


Outside of work I am the mad dog lady, with a pocketful of treats, who talks to all dogs on my daily dog walk, accompanying our 7 year old rescue toy poodle, Brucie. My first love is music, and many moons ago I was a backing musician in the local social clubs. Sadly that role has been replaced by backing tapes but I do like to keep the skills alive and currently have a very dusty saxophone sitting at home, waiting to be played!

 

My career started in the Army, serving in the REME supporting various units throughout the world.  When leaving the Army I completed my BSC (Hons) and PGCE; this ignited the flame to teach and coach.  I then spent many years in various roles; project management, teaching, business owner, retail and then working in apprenticeships. 
 
I enjoy coaching and helping aspiring managers and leaders to be the best version of themselves.  As a Development Coach, I support and coach all my learners to develop their knowledge, skills and behaviours as a leader and a manager, and successfully achieve their apprenticeship.  
 
In my spare time I enjoy riding my bikes; off-road and roadie, walking & embracing the countryside and we have just taken up paddle-boarding!

I began my career in the legal profession as a legal secretary, progressing into a paralegal role and successfully qualifying as a Chartered Legal Executive.  After almost 10 years in practice, I embarked upon a new challenge; supporting and mentoring apprentice paralegals and Chartered Legal Executives.   
 
I am passionate about coaching learners and helping them unlock their full potential and I am motivated by seeing learners progress, develop and achieve their goals.  
 
Outside of work, you’ll mostly find me on “dance mum” duties.  Linked to that, I run a Charity with a fellow dance mum and as part of this we organise and run a dance festival in the West of England; the aim is to enable young people to develop their abilities in performing arts, fostering resilience, ambition and confidence. To date this annual event has been a great success!
